Sustainability features in optical networking
Sustainability is built into Fujitsu’s DNA and the 1FINITY Ultra Optical System continues to raise the bar by achieving a 60% reduction in CO2 emissions across the network. It achieves this in the T900 by applying Fujitsu’s liquid cooling technology, the first time this has been done in optical networking transmission equipment. Liquid cooling provides twice the cooling capacity compared to a conventional air-cooled system, extending the lifecycle of the equipment, as well as the maintenance intervals.
Additional energy savings come from using a five nanometer DSP technology, as well as the novel power of efficient algorithms and the advanced packaging of DSP in optics. The L900 improves sustainability per bit per kilometer by extending the reach using forward Raman technology. Automation features and operational optimizations further improve the sustainability metrics making the 1FINITY Ultra Optical System the greenest transmission platform out there.
Automation and optimization features in the 1FINITY Ultra Optical System
The 1FINITY Ultra Optical System automates each customer as they go through an operational experience. Fujitsu has taken all the steps that the customer takes and addressed them in the 1FINITY Ultra Optical System, starting with the installation. Every step along the way, we made sure that the process was automated. First, we added automation to the fibering. Customers can fiber up the ROADM node with very few cables and in some cases, it could be as much as a 92% reduction in fibering. That reduces the human error that could be involved in fibering because the ROADM set up is actually complex. The second step is monitoring. There is automatic monitoring of the network to such an extent that the user can leave the network in autopilot mode.
From a diagnostic perspective, the T900 has unique capabilities. Without the help of a line system, it can not only detect what the fault is, but it can also detect where the fault is. This makes it very easy for the customer to recover from that fault. The T900 offers a deep optical telemetry, which streams a lot of data from the transponder that can be used for AI (Artificial Intelligence) and ML (Machine Learning) applications to perform preventive maintenance, fault diagnostics, and run the system error-free without human touch. Overall, the 1FINITY Ultra Optical System is designed from the ground up to reduce human error, increase reliability, cut costs, shrink your carbon footprint, and optimize your network’s performance.
How does the 1FINITY Ultra Optical System offer extreme performance?
The extreme performance of the 1FINITY Ultra Optical System is driven by the innovations that are packed across its two main platforms: a 14.4 Terabit compact modular transponder and a 1.6 Petabit per second ultra scalable open line system. Both of these platforms are the highest capacity in the industry. The 1FINITY T900/950 series uses a five nanometer, highly power efficient DSP, along with the latest signal shaping techniques, and it operates at the highest baud rates used for optical transmission. All that makes it an extremely flexible system for a broad range of applications. For example, it can carry three 400 Gig clients over a single 1.2 Terabit wavelength across a few hundred kilometers, which is perfect for extended DCI applications. It can also cover 90% of metro and long-haul distances at an 800 Gig rate. Where it really excels is making 800 Gig anywhere possible, especially for ultra long-haul distances by leveraging the L900 line system’s unique and novel forward Raman technology to have a 40% performance improvement.
As a result, the 1FINITY Ultra Optical System can deliver reach and capacity today that competitive solutions are still sketching to deliver a few years from now. The L900 is the industry’s first continuous C+L ROADM line system that can not only switch, but also add and drop wavelengths across C- and L-Band as a single wide-spectrum band, requiring only half the equipment compared to current bolt-on approaches. And it does this while achieving an 80% power reduction versus C-band only. Altogether Fujitsu’s 1FINITY Ultra Optical System integrates the latest technologies to deliver the highest capacity, the longest reach, and the lowest cost of ownership.
